The More, the better?

May 27, 2023

We are all obsessed with numbers. The phrase, “the more, the better”

Is true to most of us. We think the more friends we see, the safer and secure we feel. The more money means power. The greater abilities, more confidence. However, when we do not see with our eyes their presence, we become weak, anxious, and lost. We feel vulnerable and unsafe. That’s the reason why we always compare. No wonder God rebuked King David for his disobedience in numbering the people. Well, this is another story we can reflect on next time.

It happened with the people of Judah. They were afraid when they saw that their enemies were more in numbers. They saw power in more numbers. Praise God for King Hezekiah, whose faith in God was strong by not allowing himself to be blinded by numbers. It’s because he was walking right with God that he showed courage. He did not simply wait for God to intervene, he did his job. He showed initiative. He exercised his faith.

King Hezekian showed humility by taking counsel from his princes and leaders that led him organize and mobilize the people to not dwell on fear. He strengthened himself, and together with his people, they built the broken wall for reinforcement.

While he was busy leading and working, he instructed his people not to be afraid of Sennacherib, the king of Assyria and the multitude with him. Hezekiah said, “there are more with us than him. With him is the arm of the flesh, but with us is our God, who will help and fight for us.”

Hezekiah was aware of the fierceness and the strength of the enemies, but his faith in God was such that he wouldnot allow himself to be affected by what he saw and felt. Through the eye of faith, he saw the invisible and yet omnipotent God!

Lesson/Application

How many times have we allowed ourselves get affected and be dismayed by what we see around us. We constantly face threats and intimidation from the enemies. We feel overwhelmed, outnumbered, and powerless. We have often forgotten the presence of our Almighty God. You see, God is not only above us and around us but He is also in us. “Greater is He that is in us, than he that is in the world.”

We may not see Him physically, but He is real and with us always to protect, sustain, and comfort us. We cannot see Him with our physical eyes, but with the eye of faith, He is here with all His angels. Soon, at His coming, this faith will turn into sight to enjoy His glorious presence and company forevermore.

Conclusion:

Whenever we feel afraid and overwhelmed by the challenges around us, and threatened by the enemies ready to attack us, do not lose hope. Put our trust in God for He knows what we are going through and in His own will and time, He is always with us to fight for us.
