When Lot Chose His Journey

Genesis 13:11 -” Then Lot chose him all over the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves from one the other. “

In this passage, we witness the separation of Abram (later known as Abraham) and his nephew Lot. They had both journeyed together, but as their flocks grew, conflicts arose. Lot chose the fertile plain of the Jordan, which was well-watered and reminiscent of the garden of the Lord. Meanwhile, Abram remained in the land of Canaan, where he had initially settled.

Our final destination is always directed by our deepest desires! When we set our eyes on something that seems to be good and harmless, we often disregard the possibilities of serious consequences it may bring later on. 

The story of Lot reminds me that there are decisions in life that’s purely based on superficial appearance. Lot’s decision to settle in the lush Jordan plain reflects a desire for comfort and abundance. Without considering the available “reviews” at that time, he made an irreversible decision about his relocation and separation from the will of God which led to the destruction of his family. His choice led him toward the wickedness of Sodom. The choices he made led to serious events that eventually destroyed his family.

In contrast, Abram’s contentment with the land of Canaan, despite its challenges, demonstrates trust in God’s promises. Abram prioritized his relationship with God over material wealth. He returned to the same place where he had previously built an altar to worship the Lord. His focus remained on spiritual matters rather than worldly gains. Despite Abram’s time in Egypt (where he acquired great riches), he returned to the same spot where he had begun. This highlights the importance of starting afresh, seeking God’s presence, and recommitting ourselves to His purposes.

I pray that you and I will carefully consider the “reviews” before taking a giant leap to the unknown. God has placed people in our lives, such as our parents, God fearing teachers, most especially our pastors, that possess Godly wisdom who can provide wise counsel which will help us make the right choices. Proverbs 11‬:14‬ says, ”Where no counsel is, the people fall: But in the multitude of counselors there is safety“. our dear brethren, the safest place to be is in the will of God! May we seek His will in our lives for the sake of our families. 

Our Prayer for Today

Our Heavenly Father, like Lot, we journey through the plains of life. Sometimes, we must separate from those we love. Grant us wisdom and discernment as we make choices, and may our paths lead us closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
