GOD SHOWS MERCY TO THE MERCIFUL
Matthew 5:7
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Someone has described mercy as “not getting what we deserve.”
That’s not a bad explanation. Spiritually, the Bible says we deserve to be eternally separated from our holy God (see Romans 6:23) because of our great rebellion against him (see Romans 3:23). But God, in the ultimate act of mercy, offers us a full pardon and the riches of heaven. We deserve the worst. In Christ we get the very best.
In his famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus mentioned mercy (see Matthew 5:7). His point is that if we’re truly right with God, we will extend mercy to the undeserving people in our lives. The more mercy we show, the more of mercy we will know.
Who in your life needs to be shown mercy?
GOD’S PROMISE TO ME:
• I bless those who are merciful.
MY PRAYER TO GOD:
God, you are merciful. Thank you for not giving me the eternal death I deserve. Instead, I have life in Christ. Teach me to be wild and lavish in my willingness to overlook wrongs and to bless those who don’t deserve blessing. Amen.
