YOU CAN TRUST IN GOD’S FORGIVENESS
1 John 1:8-9
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Is anything more precious than forgiveness? What a blessing when, after we’ve really blown it with someone, we apologize and hear that person say, “I forgive you.” A weight is lifted from us, and our relationship is restored.
Today’s verses acknowledge the reality of sin. We have sin—that’s the truth. And at times we yield to our sinful nature. Beyond our comprehension is the fact that God sees us as righteous because of his Son’s death on our behalf, yet he knows that we will not be truly righteous until we get to heaven. So in the interim, God offers forgiveness. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse us.
We don’t need to live our lives attempting to attain some fashion of “sinless-ness,” for we only fool ourselves in the attempt. Jesus has already paid for our sin. Instead, we can live to please God. When we mess up, we can own up to our wrongs. God promises forgiveness and cleansing. His justice provides for the promise; his faithfulness guarantees it.
GOD’S PROMISE TO ME:
• When you confess your sins, I will be faithful and just and will forgive those sins and cleanse you from every wrong.
MY PRAYER TO GOD:
Lord, you say that if we claim to be sinless we’re only fooling ourselves. Our old nature still exists. Give me an attitude of discernment and humility, so that when I sin I will know it and desire to be cleansed of it. Thank you for your forgiveness, which removes sins as far as the east is from the west. Amen.
