YOU DON’T NEED MIGHT AND POWER—YOU NEED HIS SPIRIT

Zechariah 4:6

Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.

The noted author A. W. Tozer once observed, “If the Holy Spirit was withdrawn from the church today, 95 percent of what we do would go on and no one would know the difference.”

Ouch! We may not completely agree with his percentage, but his point is valid. How easy it is, even for the people of God, to depend on human strength, manmade solutions, and/or worldly strategies.

When the Jewish exiles returned from Babylonian captivity, they set about the project of rebuilding the temple. The foundation was quickly laid under the able leadership of Governor Zerubbabel. But then the workers tired, and the work languished.

God raised up the prophet Zechariah to motivate the people. His timeless reminder? Great works of God and for God are always empowered by God. If we are not dependent on God’s Spirit, then our efforts, no matter how noble they may appear, will not accomplish what God has in mind.

What important work or needed task looms in front of you? Will you yield yourself to the control of God’s all-powerful Spirit?

GOD’S PROMISE TO ME:

• You accomplish my work by trusting in my Spirit.

MY PRAYER TO GOD:

Father, forgive me for the times when I try to do your work in my way and by my power. I yield myself now to you. Fill me with your Spirit. Do immeasurably more than all I ask or imagine. Amen.
